Personal Finance (Not Investing) • Considering asking for old job back

I used to be a manager.

I had a "boomerang employee" leave and return. As long as they left on good terms (giving notice and not sending an inappropriate exit email) we love returning boomerang employees. We already know their skills and productivity. They may have gotten useful experience / perspective from the other work environment.

But the best thing is they know "the grass is not always greener" and boomerang employees are likely to stay and be loyal for a long time. The boomerang employees may communicate that to other employees, improving overall retention.

Managers are professionals. They deal with hiring, firing, and job separations. That's their #1 job. Good managers (and employees) understand that employees are responsible for their own careers and every employee will eventually leave. There's nothing wrong with that. Having an employee "own their own career" and decide come back is great. There is no dishonor in asking to go back

One warning: I also had a low productivity employee voluntarily leave and later want to return. We declined to rehire him.
