The point wasn’t about years when the market closed lower at year-end than it opened in January. Rather, 1977 was the last year in which the S&P 500 never exceeded its opening value throughout the entire year—meaning it stayed consistently below the January 1 level for all 12 months. This is different from years where the market dipped below the January level but still had temporary rallies above it before closing lower. The nuance is about the persistence of the decline all year, not just the final outcome in December.
