Parts are more expensive than, say Honda. But dramatically cheaper than Lexus, in large part because BMW does not hide the actual manufacturer of their parts. So Lemforder and Meyle suspension components that are literally the same as your factory pieces are easily available, as are Mann and Mahle filters, etc. etc. Maintenance intervals are similar or longer than other brands--BMW got a lot of flack back in the day for 15k oil change intervals, but there was no surplus of engine failures that came about as a result.Aren't the parts more expensive, the engineering more complex, and the frequency of oil changes and regular maintenance required to be more frequent, all leading to higher costs (of parts and labor), than say an average Honda/Toyota, regardless of finding a reliable independent mechanic? If you have a reliable independent mechanic, owning a BMW is no different than any other car.
If you are willing to purchase your own parts to take to your independent mechanic, there are multiple vendors that have a lifetime replacement warranty on EVERYTHING--yes, including brakes and engine oil--making very long term ownership potentially cheaper than even a budget brand. My Audi (which has expensive parts, more in line with Lexus) will be getting a $1200 worth of new brakes in the spring. Net cost to me will be $0, since I do my own basic work and I ordered those parts from FCP Euro last time.
