Hard for me to say, subjectively.

I held stocks through all of that, so know what it felt like.

I wasn't holding gold all that time.
right, but don't you think it would have felt even worse to hold gold since the recovery took TWICE as long as with stocks?
I hold both. Didn't bother me at all. Mainly because my other assets made up for the difference. I actually prefer when gold lags because generally that means everything else is cruising along quite nicely. But, when there is no where else to turn, I have been glad to be owning gold. And, it often overshoots during these timeframes leading to longer downturns. Again, doesn't bother me at all as I am not looking at assets in isolation.
