One way you could estimate it for different years is to use portfoliovisualizer to compare VTI with a mix of VOO and VXF in a backtest starting at the given year, and find empirically the mix that replicated the return of VTI. Set dividend reinvestment and rebalancing off for the test.

Example:

So, the S&P500 included about 83.8% of the market cap of a total market index in Oct 2010.
Fascinating, thank you. I used your link and tried different weightings. There was basically no difference between 82/18 and 85/15 (and 83.8/16.2). It makes sense that wiki hasn't been updated, because small differences don't matter.
Why not use the self-directed brokerage option available through the Google 401K plan and buy the ETFs (VTI & VXUS) you want? I think the brokerage option gives you access to Ameritrade (now Schwab?) brokerage accounts. At least that's the impression I got from reading: https://www.teamblind.com/post/Does-Goo ... ort=recent. This PowerPoint describes the enrollment process (at another institution): Vanguard Self-Directed Brokerage Option through TD Ameritrade: Participant Enrollment Experience. YMMV
Interesting, I had no idea, thanks. I'll stick with Vanguard because 1) I have other Vanguard accounts and I don't want the hassle of dealing with a new institution (Ameritrade), 2) Self-directed sounds complicated (both signing up and using).
