- However, my effective rate at that time will probably be in the 7-8% range before Soc Sec, maybe more like 5-6% after. And I *think* it's fair to focus on effective rate here b/c I'm dealing with *necessary* withdrawals for living expenses. (I understand that Roth conversions look at marginal rates, but that depends on the fact that they're *optional* That's how I've understood it.)
Whenever deciding to do this of that with your money you can almost always decide on a dollar by dollar basis. Here you don't need do max solo 401k or none. You can be somewhere in between. To find the best point look at marginal rates. Effective rates can hide this. You almost never need to worry about effective tax rates in personal finance.
