Your question is actually two questions -I have most of my retirement savings in an s&p 500 index fund. I am considering transferring a few individual stocks into s&p. Is 100 % in s&p a good way to go? I feel this is the best return for a fairly safe investment. I know no investment is completely safe. My reasoning for wanting to be 100% s&p is that I’m 49 with only 250k in retirement savings. So I’d like to get the highest return possible and get that in the neighborhood of 1 mil in 10 years.I believe Warren B recommends 90% in s&p index and 10% bonds. Is anyone else 100% in on s&p 500?
--- Should I be 100% in equities at age 49? - Personally, I'm OK with that, presuming that your risk tolerance is that high. That's where I was when I was 49.
--- How should my equities be allocated between US and international? - Personally, I wouldn't put 100% of my equities in the US. While US equities have outperformed international for several years now, all good things must come to an end. I'd personally feel more comfortable with an allocation to international equities in the 20-35% range. Once again, that's where I am.
