I would be very careful in FL due to storm and insurance concerns. If you can find a house in safe location with low insurance, then go ahead. But never buy new - you will typically get much more value out of an older home. If you like "newish" get one a couple years old with all the extra money already invested in landscaping, window coverings, etc. Look at as many homes as you can to get a very sold feel for the market and strike the best deal you can. Homeowners are much, much more flexible on pricing than developers of new homes. If you end up buying new, get the developer to include EVERYTHING - appliances, window coverings, etc. Avoid HOA situations.
