It surprises me somewhat that Bogleheads seem to have an interest in expensive TVs. Realistically rooms haven't gotten that much bigger, and we all used to have a 24" or 27" TV. I'm looking at a 39.5" TV right now and I don't know where I'd put a much larger one; larger than maybe 50" would look... awkward in my living room.
The experience is simply better. Just because technology limited us in the past, doesn't mean we have to artificially restrict ourselves once technology improves and costs come down.

The first TV I ever bought with my own money--thirty years ago--was a 32". Because I couldn't afford a 36", and the Mitsubishi 40" (They were the only ones that made tube TVs this big) cost as much as I made in a year.

The second, 22 years ago, was 57", which went in the living room of our 1385 sqft starter house. Since then the smallest one I've bought for any purpose is the 49" that is my current computer monitor. We do have one room with physical space limitations that keeps us to a 55" OLED, but otherwise it's 65s all the way around. One day the living room will get a 77" or 82" OLED.
The experience with a new Lexus is arguably better than with an ancient Toyota with 278k miles too, but we have all these Bogleheads running around in the latter... and immensely proud of it. It seems inconsistent. Maybe there should be a thread where everyone can tout their old tube TVs.
