We have 2 kids and have been super happy with our Subaru Outback. The back storage space is fantastic, and backseat is plenty big for 2 carseats and other kids stuff.
We also both were coming from driving sedans, and the Outback is great for someone who isn't used to driving an SUV or larger car.
I can't speak to your concern about the mileage. Neither of us has a long commute, and I must confess I don't pay much attention.
