I travel about 50% of my weeks and routinely see people holding up boarding because they can't "carry on" their "carry-on". One person waits for someone to help - sometimes that person is me and it takes me a minute to unbuckle my seatbelt and stand up to help. Another minute to put the bag up. Other times the person struggles themselves before someone offers to help. The minutes then add up if multiple people on the plane have a carry-on they can't really carry on. The boarding line backs up leading to a delay.I fly often enough, around 8-14 times a year. I have never seen anyone hold up the boarding line because they can't lift a bag. They ask for help and 100% of the time, someone helps them with no time wasted.
I read all the posts.
While there may be kind people around willing to help, people who can't lift their own bags slow down the boarding process and can delay boarding and take off. I stand by my statement - if you can't lift your bag rather than hoping for kindness from others you should check it. And just pay the fee.
It is called a "carry-on" - you should be capable of carrying it on and lifting it up into the overhead. If not - check it. Simple.
What I find funny on planes is how all these people stand up right as the plane parks and then they wait, standing, all crammed together like sardines. As if standing right away somehow gets them off the plane faster. It doesn't!!!
If you can't lift your bag - check it.
