Carmax or Carvana might have given you more than dealer but I wouldn't worry about it. Next time just go in with quotes from Carmax and Carvana before trading in so you know what your options are
No more private party sales. That's way too much work. I've done my share in the past.
Going forward, I'll try to pass an excess vehicle to a family member.
If that doesn't work, I'll get a final out-the-door quote for a new vehicle. Then I'll ask that dealer if they are interested in buying my old vehicle. If the price is right, I'll bite. Technically that's a trade-in. That's also the most convenient way to go from an old vehicle to a new one.
If the price is not right, it's CarMax or the like.
