OP is highly unlikely to be low income as defined by Freefile or TaxAide, given the presence of AMT on last year’s return. FreeTaxUSA is probably the best bet.If you're low income, Taxaid is by far the easiest option if you want someone else to do it. If you're low income, you'll also qualify for the Freefile option https://apps.irs.gov/app/freeFile/I've received an email that the tax preparer I've used for the past 10 years will now be charging a base fee of $800. (Last year I paid $210.) I'm thinking I need to make a change but am feeling intimidated.
Last year I had
Form 1040
Schedule 2 (1.2 excess advance premium tax credit repayment)
Schedule 3 (1.1 foreign tax credit and 1.3 education credits)
Schedule B (interest and ordinary dividends)
Schedule D (I don't think I'll have this for 2024)
Form 1116 for the foreign tax credit and alternative minimum tax
Schedule B (6)
Form 6251 (alternative minimum tax)
Schedule 8812 (credits for qualifying children)
Form 8863 (education credits)
Form 8995 (6. REIT dividends)
Form 8962 (premium tax credit)
This is:
a taxable account with total stock, total international stock, total bond, and mmf.
A bank savings account.
A 21 yr old in her last year of college with tuition paid out of a 529. She worked part time and lived in a different city. I have been claiming her as my dependent.
ACA marketplace medical insurance.
I'd appreciate advice on where to look for tax prep help. Would the AARP tax-aide program be a good fit? HR Block? Buy Turbo Tax and do it myself? Find a new tax preparer?
If your income isn't that low, you can use https://www.freetaxusa.com (taxhawk) for free fed and $15 state (including state efile), and the UI is just as easy (if not easier) as TT, and a heckuvalot cheaper
