Early on in my (financial services) career, I had the lucky opportunity to meet Ed Owens. I was in my mid 20s, and my girlfriend (now my wife) and I each put $5k into the Health Care Fund, which for us was a prince’s ransom. The fund just went up and up, and given that neither of us were making much money at all, we didn’t pay much attention to those yearly taxable capital gains….until we got into our mid 40s, realized the tax inefficiency of it all, and given that we had rounded out portfolio the “proper” way over the years, used our not immodest (to us!) holdings in VGHAX to establish our DAF at Vanguard…which has done “fine” (not gangbusters) but serves what we hope is a greater purpose. I also had no idea that Ed passed away. So thanks to the other poster who included his obituary.
