Everyone brings up good points. I guess paying 50-100% more for an emergency repair is just part of homeownership. Thankfully we can afford it, but it still irks me.
As much as the big companies seem like ripoffs, at least (1) I know they are insured, (2) employees are background checked (important if they're going to be in my house and around my family), (3) they warranty their work, and (4) if something goes wrong I know I have recourse against them. They are also big enough that they aren't going to risk messing around and rigging something up that violates code or is potentially unsafe.
It is so incredibly hard to find good, knowledgeable, and honest tradespeople these days. The really good ones are in such high demand that they may never come out or even call you back.
And yes, I agree they will never be replaced by AI
