Investing - Theory, News & General • Is 401K as good of an investment as advertised

I really want to emphasize, again, that a 401K is not an investment.
I hear what you are saying. My 401K allows for a limited number of investments. Stock funds. Bond funds. Funds that invest in short term investments. Or funds that provide a mix of the above.

What types of investments does Brokerage Link allow me to get into that are not offered by my typical 401K fund? It sounds like it allows me to pick and choose individual investments and make my own blend if you will. I assume I can buy individual stocks. I think I read that I can buy T-bills through a brokerage, perhaps it opens the door to that. Perhaps I can buy an individual bond instead of buying through a bond fund? These are the same categories of investments that my 401K already offers though. Other than giving me more direct control of where I put my money, does Brokerage Link allow me to invest in a different category, or type of investment?
Mathematically, it is extraordinarily unlikely that you will perform the market by choosing your own stocks. It’s not an opinion or an assessment of your skills. Mathematically, it’s extremely unlikely that you will perform the market long-term. Something like 90% chance that you will fail at this. Again, mathematically, the smart money goes into a low-cost broad-based index fund.
