In my case, I needed to since I had done a Roth conversion and owed a lot. I was also in a Safe Harbor, both State and Fed. So I used IRS Direct Pay and the FTB site to pay what I expected at a max to owe on Apr 15 if I had filed on that date.Yes I think filing for extension will give me some relief. So I need to file extension for both federal and state? This is the first time I’m having so much trouble with filing taxesI'm also out of the country coming back on 4/10. I'm missing a K1. So I filed an Extension and paid what HRB said I will owe. I used IRS Direct Pay and CA's FTB site. The K1 will likely be - (minus), so I expect what I paid will cover everything. Getting it out of the way early has been a relief.
For you, the need for an extension depends. At the Fed level, a filing automatically gets extended, but not the tax due, So if you WILL be getting a refund, no extension request is needed. In Calif, it's the same as the Fed. If none is due at Apr 15, the filing is automatic. If you want an official extension with none due on Apr 15, use IRS Direct Pay for $1, as that will notify the IRS that you are officially extending.
Do note, I have no knowledge of how other states handle it, only how Calif handles it.
