I've started warming up to guided tours.
I went on one with Road Scholar and plan to go on more.
I like it that they've been there before; the groups are around 15-20.
In the very least, reading up on tours offered where you want to go can give you a template for a trip you want to plan on your own.
I have successfully book 3 major tours and several single day excursions through TourRadar, a travel consolidator who matches clients up with in country tour operators that have been vetted for service and reliability. I have also gone back to countries after touring first professionally with the self confidence that I knew where I actually wanted to go.

Never been to New Zealand but it is on the bucket list (ranked somewhere in the low teens). My first pass would be to look for a cruise out of Sydney that circles NZ.
