I think a good analogy is Whole Life insurance. Yes it makes sense for some, but for the vast majority of people it's one of the dumbest things you can do with your money, and it's one of those products that are more often aggressively sold to naive individuals who haven't done the research. I believe avoiding timeshares is good blanket advice for the general population with occasional exceptions for well informed individuals.
And just like whole life, once the sunk cost of buying in is gone, continuing can have value, but it's really complicated to figure out.
