Personal Consumer Issues • Security key limitations for Vanguard

Sorry for assuming that typing AlwaysUV into the Yubico search engine would be the way to find keys with that feature. I'll add that I've not seen AlwaysUV mentioned in the feature list of any keys. I was only able to locate what I believe are keys with the feature with the help of your deep knowledge of the product line that is more typical of a Yubico employee, than of a customer.

Apparently, support for passwordless authentication is the description to look for if one wants a key supporting AlwaysUV.

Silly me for thinking that buying keys listed as supported by the services we use was a good way to choose keys. And we spent $340 on the 4 keys we have. Such nerve of me to be annoyed that I have to replace fully functional keys that cost $340 because of my faulty assumption that the keys working with the services we use and the keys supporting pins meant that the keys would support pins properly with the services we use.
I am sorry for your situation and confusion, and as I said I think Yubico has some questionable deceptive marketing tactics and makes it very difficult to get information on anything but their costly YubiKey Series.

I would like to make clear I am not and never have been a Yubico employee, in fact they might even dislike me. And yes, I know their product line better than most consumers since I have helped companies negotiate the best deals with them.

I thought the link I had posted https://docs.yubico.com/hardware/yubike ... rview.html had the information you needed. And yes, it took me a while to find that page, and not by search on their site.

Although I had not noticed that if you searched for “AlwaysUV” on the page you would have thought the Security Key Series did not support that feature since its table had “Always UV” instead. My apologies for the confusion.

Personally, unless this site is of such high value or if you are a highly targeted person or you are careless with keys I would live with the idiosyncrasies at log in and the small risk of your keys being targeted by thieves. But only you can make that tradeoff. BTW if you had been using U2F keys on this site (like Vanguard until 2022), you were doing it without a PIN.

If you wish to discuss this offline feel free to PM me.
