There are people who are finding homeowner's insurance too cost prohibitive (in Florida) and they are going without insurance. Risky but perhaps they'd just sell the land if the house washes out to sea. Or they are taking the risk if they can afford to rebuild with funds out of pocket.
Regarding homeowner's insurance, it isn't the cost of the house & contents that I am concerned with. It is the liability for someone getting injured on our property. Say an elderly visitor falls down our steps and gets paralyzed. And say that visitor's insurance company comes after us for damages.
