Insurers have to show the state dept of insurance their claims history for rate approval. Claim numbers don't lie. No way to put Florida claims into the Ilinois submission, unless there's outright fraud. State Farm was not accused of refusing to submit claims, they are accused of, "not proving it was due to extreme weather". OK, but are the claims valid, or not?State Farm is claiming that extreme weather in IL is the culprit. Some sites indicate the weather has gotten worse
State farm Florida exists to protect the other state farm company from Florida losses, so that's bogus.
I'm not buying it. I have lived here most of my life, and the weather was far more extreme in the 1970s when I was a kid. Huge blizzards that paralyzed Chicago in 1977 and 1979 and caused massive damage. The winters were colder and more damaging back then. Nasty heat waves in the mid 90s that killed hundreds. The last 20 years have been very mild.
sure, this isn't scientific, but I see a trend of insurance companies and others using climate change as this vague, nebulous excuse for hiking rates and prices As the state regulators have pointed out, State Farm isn't giving them the data and details concerning these weather events and their relation to claims--and this is why the governor is accusing them of playing games and shifting costs from places like Florida and CA (which have had more storms, fires, etc.) to IL.
Of course, how the losses and the requested rate increase get "spun" by politicians is by definition political, forbidden for discussion.
