Personal Consumer Issues • That Frugal Thing You Do

Although I had to do my own shopping for decades since I was single until recently, I didn't care for it or did more than the basics. Now retired I have more time and can easily get up early (often too early by habit or sleep issues) and hit stores when they open and avoid crowds, and have gone to places I never really visited before.

I've found dollar stores can be a good place to buy cheaply, small quantities of medicines that you usually never use up before expiration. I'm referring to things like anti-itch and antibiotic creams.

Apps are key to saving money at restaurants. Obviously not eating out is the most frugal thing to do but I enjoy going out and often we can save $10, 20%, BOGO, etc. from various restaurants we enjoy. From Walmart+ I get 25% off my Burger King check once every day. I'm not someone who frequents it much but when you take a couple of kids the savings add up.

Also with youtube you can do more repairs around the house yourself. Just make sure to verify the information since I've seen some very questionable or outright wrong info being provided by someone who clearly isn't an expert.
I went to a Dollar General store last week (after spending much time buying many items in the Salvation Army store next to it).

I bought nothing.

It did not feel like anything was of value. They were small sizes and the whole thing felt it was aimed at those of lower income who also could not compute value.
I went once, and that was my experience too. Lots of processed foods, but not much in the way of actual ingredients. Also aisles and aisles of odd, plastic things. If I lived close to one, I might pop in now and then to see if anything was of interest, but they are all a bit out of the way for me. In the end, I really don't consume the types of things that they sell.
