Personal Consumer Issues • That Frugal Thing You Do

Buy two pairs of socks with the identical pattern/style, especially if you really like them and if they are a unique design. That way, if one of the socks gets a hole in it (and you don't know how or don't want to darn the hole to fix it) there will be 3 remaining socks out of the 4 to choose a pair from. If another one gets a hole, there are 2 remaining. If you only had one pair, you most likely would toss both socks if one had a hole. This in effect gives you, in essence, the amount of times wearing 3 pairs of socks for the price of 2, especially good if they are favorites of yours and you'd rather not bid them goodbye.

Another method would be to buy a number of pairs the same color and style in one color -- like black or gray (or whatever is your favorite). If holes start to appear, you have plenty of other socks to replace it.

Of course, there are videos on how to darn socks -- I think you have buy a darning egg and some yarn, sometimes sold in a little kit. But if you're looking for some clean socks to put on in the morning, you might not want to be bothered with this. Of course, clipping one's toenails when they get too long and holes start appearing in your socks also helps, but sometimes socks also just wear out as well from usage.

I think I read somewhere this might work for damaged stockings or pantyhose, but it might involve cutting off one of the legs of each of two pairs and somehow wearing them together at the same time. Have fun! :)
Of course, being the Ultra Frugal I continue to wear the ones with holes! Even thought I have lots of new ones never worn. Just have to use all until nothing else can be eked out of them!
