I'm seeking insights from individuals with experience living in the Blue Ridge Mountain region. My wife and I, nearing retirement in the next year or two, are eager to relocate from the upper midwest to a more favorable climate. We're known for our active lifestyle, often spending our free days hiking, kayaking, walking our Labrador, or engaging in exercise. Therefore, finding a region that aligns with our energetic pursuits is paramount, alongside essential amenities like healthcare and groceries. We've explored areas such as Asheville, Boone, Roanoke, SMNP, and Johnson City, all of which seem promising. However, we're keen on spending an extended period in a location before committing to purchasing a home. Could those familiar with the region offer insights on areas to target or avoid? Thus far, Murphy, NC to Brevard, NC, and the surrounding vicinity of Blacksburg, VA, have piqued our interest, but we recognize there's much more to explore. Any thoughts or recommendations would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!
