In the 1970's everyone knew that the S&P500 had grown more than most mutual funds. This was regarded as a curiosity. Burton Malkiel, Andrew Tobias, and some TIAA-CREF newsletters pointed out that Vanguard had started an index fund which actually made use of this curiosity and did better than most mutual funds.
They all recommended buying and holding similar funds. TIAA-CREF said they had adopted indexing for a major part of their CREF stock fund. They made a lot of sense and were convincing.
