How do people who don’t balance their checkbooks know where they stand? I write everything in my checkbook - my few checks, autopays and online pays of cc plus my deposits. I guess most people balance their bank accounts online.
Most people do not balance their bank accounts at all. I doubt most could even explain what that is.

In my younger days, I balanced my checking account. First by hand, and then with Quicken. As others have mentioned, finding mistakes is rare and the value was in being aware of where your money was going.

These days, I don't bother. I know where I stand by experience and the regular cadence of expenses. I download and briefly review each monthly statement, but I don't go through detailed checks to try to get my (nonexistent) register to match the bank's. I've found that takes time away from thinking about bigger picture things relating to my finances, which is far more important to me.
