Personal Finance (Not Investing) • 403b from TIAA rolling to Traditional IRA

I rolled over my TIAA 403(b) to a newly opened Schwab traditional IRA earlier this year several months after I left my last employer. I talked to Schwab first, thinking they could help me initiate the rollover from their end. The Schwab guy said the 403(b) has to be initiated from TIAA’s end. However, he said I can ask TIAA to send the check directly to Schwab, and he gave me an address for my local Schwab office. I then called TIAA and they had me submit one rollover form per account number (one for the employer contributions and the other for my own contributions). I filled out the instruction directing the checks to go directly to Schwab. TIAA mailed the check within the timeframe the agent told me over the phone, which I think was 7-10 days.

I decided to pay the penalty and sell/close my TIAA traditional before I submitted the rollover because I had a small amount, around $10k, and it was worth it to just close out all my TIAA accounts. If you have TIAA traditional, that will have to stay behind.
