Keep the GLD. It's only around 2.5% of your entire portfolio and adds diversity. Even if you use the full $700k in taxable for a house down payment, GLD is only around 4% of your entire portfolio. In asset allocation for rebalancing, just create another category for precious metals. As a former divorce lawyer, I recommend keeping the wife happy and making compromises. If GLD is more than 10-15% of your entire portfolio, revisit the conversation. Consider also contributing to a 529.
