In my taxable accounts, I prefer monthly (or quarterly) dividend payments rather than annually. Both for regular cash flow for retirement spending and for tax planning (easier to look at average monthly/quarterly dividends through September to be sure withholding for the current year is sufficient and plan for next year).
But that is entirely a matter of my personal preference. For others it doesn't matter.
As noted, if your dividends are distributed annually, the fund is not just stockpiling cash throughout the year and sending you a lump sum in December!
