Yes.+1 to Dufus’s feedback to your questions.
What is the overall portfolio allocation for you/spouse?
Currently, 65% Stock, 10% Bond, Rest in cash. I feel I have gotten too cash heavy. Cash includes cash in bank + CDs + Treasury Direct.
It is more tax efficient to hold US/international equities in Taxable and Roth accounts and to hold fixed income such as bonds/US treasuries/cash/CD in your/spouse’s 401k tax deferred accounts rather than Taxable.
OK. So one potential actionable task or me is to move cash into Brokerage and buy index funds.
Are the $330k of bank/CD/treasury bonds in Taxable accounts all retirement savings? If you do decide to hold some cash/emergency fund in a Taxable account, consider holding it in Vanguard VUSXX (a state-tax exempt treasury money market fund) if it has a higher tax equivalent yield than bank accounts/CDs
.
We invested in CD during COVID when rates were high. We don have a precise use of this money. Yields are around 3-3.5% and relatively short duration of 6-9 months. Now that rates are dropping again I prefer to liquidate the CDs and use them for buying additional index funds in my brokerage account.
What are your 2025/6 retirement contribution $ by account? If either of your 401k plans offer a mega backdoor Roth, consider fully utilizing it. If your paychecks become too low after the 401k withholdings, use the Taxable cash for living expenses. Moving the retirement savings in this manner from Taxable to Roth is good as the Roth accounts grow tax free.
Consider selling the ex-employer single stock and reinvest the proceeds in a diversified low-cost equity fund. What is the tax cost to sell? If it makes a tax difference, you could sell 1/2 in 2025 and 1/2 in 2026.
OK.
Is the HSA a retirement account (i.e., you aren’t reimbursing yourself now from the account)? Where are the funds held and how are they invested?
Yes, we generally dont touch the HSA at all and keep funds in a vanguard index fund.
Do you and spouse have adequate home/auto umbrella insurance coverage and life/disability insurance coverage?
Yes, we have home coverage and term life insurance. We get 2x salary disability coverage from work benefits
Are your and spouse’s estate plans in place including naming guardians/trusts for your minor children and POAs for financial matters and healthcare?
