Personal Consumer Issues • My New Car Buying Tips

As for the dealers, the car buying experience is no longer about haggling over price. Most prices are set in stone now. 15 years ago I could get 25% knocked off MSRP. No more. But it's a painless experience. Just don't get any extended warranties. Financing is currently around 5%.
It's not clear if you are talking about all brands or just Toyota. It may be that Toyota has been able to adjust inventory to fetch close to whatever price is on the sticker. That being said, we just bought a new Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid (Subaru rated most reliable brand, 2 years in a row...a brand to consider along with Honda and Toyota), with no trade. The dealer claimed there was no dickering. I spent 20 minutes on the internet and found many dealers offering $2500 off. My dealer eventually met that. There's one other factor today: "Documentation Fee". Seems like many dealers add a $400 to $700 "non-negotiable" fee. Be sure to shop "out the door prices". I told my dealer that I didn't care about the fee or no fee...just that my final check was no more than it would be at the lowest price dealer. So be careful when negotiating that you get the "out the door" price so that there's no $500 fee surprise at the end.
