Personal Consumer Issues • EV Shopping: lease? BMW iX, X5e, wait for iX3, Audi Q8 e-tron, or?

Leasing makes sense if you feel like you'll be missing out on important technology changes in the next few years. Most new EV models in 2026 are now starting to come with NACS charging ports, and some have newer battery tech with increased range. 800V architecture is appearing in more EVs, which allows for faster charging at DC Fast Chargers than the more common 400V architecture. Centralized computing architectures similar to Tesla and Rivian are starting to appear in more vehicles (BMW Neue Klasse in the iX3, GM has announced a next gen computing architecture for 2028 Escalade IQ, VW is in a joint venture with Rivian to adopt the Rivian architecture, and probably more...)

Cadillac Optiq, Lyriq, or Vistiq are worth investigating. I've had an Optiq for a year and have had no problems. When my lease is up I'll see what the then-current Optiq offers, and I'm also keeping an eye on the BMW iX3, Volvo EX60, and Rivian R2. They all should be in their second or maybe third model years by then.
