Investing - Theory, News & General • Has buying a basket of individual stocks become passe?

I've been a buy-and-hold index investor for 30+ years, but I seem to remember way back when that the advice for investors like myself was to aspire to be in a position to simply buy a large basket of individual stocks rather than an index fund. However, I rarely see that advice anymore.

Do the very low fees on many of the current ETF index funds mean it's just not worth the hassle to create and manage a large basket of individual stocks?
By the time you have enough capital to invest in enough individual stocks to passively create your own index fund, or direct indexing account to mirror, or attempt to mirror the returns of the index (usually involves purchasing in the neighborhood of 100-150+ stocks) - isn't it much easier to buy the US and International index funds and be done with it?
