There was nowhere in this topic I've stated that I want to know its value at all times. If you really want to know the value at all times, then you need to set up a system to price every stock in the index, multiply by its percent of the index, subtract the expense ratio and DAF fees and multiply that by the number of shares you have. That figure will change constantly. I know that some people used to like to watch the displays of share and index prices at a broker's office. Some keep CNBC or Bloomberg on all day to watch the same thing.
The beauty of a broad index fund is that you do not have to go to a broker, tune in to CNBC, or login to your account. If you want to know what your holding is worth at this instant, pull the index figure directly and either ignore the tiny cost for the DAF and expense ratio, or pull the index value and discount it by those two costs.
That will give you a more accurate answer than the always-out-of-date value you will get from the V website.
If this is just for fun, you can set it for frequent updates and see the value bounce around all day long.
The value of a fund that is exclusively for tax exempt charitable investing will move differently than a fund that accepts taxable purchases. The latter is required to calculate and distribute dividends and realized capital gains. For a total stock fund, these fo not amount to much, but the dividends at least are not zero. So if you bought a tax exempt fund and a taxable fund at the same time, their share prices would diverge, even if the total values were identical.
My quite simple question has somehow been transformed into way more than I asked.
Again .. I simply wanted to know if LIKE all my Vanguard mutual funds ...did my Vanguard Donor Advised Fund investment have a symbol so that when I download all the prices periodically .. the price for that investment would also get downloaded so that I'd not have to hand input its prices twice a month.
Twice a month is fine for me to input the prices. As I've stated it's no longer really my money though I have 100% control as to who it will go to.
I can go days / weeks with having no idea how the market is doing during those time period.
Though my Quicken file has all my transactions in it and daily prices for all Vanguard mutual funds I own .. I can go a month or more without even looking at the file and where my investments stand.
My always first motivation for opening my Quicken file is to keep it current with my latest transactions and to keep my accounts reconciled.
