You already said it in your goals: minimize taxes.
Generally you'd want to contribute to Roth 401k early in your career (lower tax bracket) and contribute to regular 401k later in your career (higher tax bracket).
If you're in a higher tax bracket now, personally I wouldn't switch based on the possibility of RMDs 20 plus years from now. Do conversations in early retirement when you're back in a lower tax bracket and then let the RMD chips fall where they may. Good problem to have.
