Simplicity helps too. You're already working with Schwab and Vanguard, so sticking with one of those means you can manage kiddo's there, within a service you already know and use, instead of having one more account/interface to use.
We use Vanguard for ours and our children's investments. It's nice only having the one platform to check. Minimums not a factor if you do ETFs - eg, VTI, you could get underway for a small amount.
