On my wishlist near that route are:
  • The Highlands, even just the drive from Inverness to Glasgow.
  • Jacobite Steam Engine (aka Hogwarts Express).
  • Hadrian’s Wall, lots of sites and hikes.
  • Stanage Edge (cliff scene from the 2005 Pride and Predjudice).
  • Brontë Parsonage Museum.
Two favorites to the south are:
  • IWM Duxford, near Cambridge. There are two air shows in July, the 4th and 5th, and the 24th. The permanent exhibits are good.
  • North Leigh Roman Villa, west of Blenheim Palace.
The English Heritage sites are generally fabulous. I always look for things near my planned locations. If you go to Stonehenge (a bit out of the way), stop by Old Sarum nearby; far less crowded, more accessible (last I was there), and a mashup of the Neolithic and the Norman invasion.
