Personal Finance (Not Investing) • Organically giving money to nice people - Implications

There's a reason why TITHING of income has been around since the 6th century.
Do you feel you would get a larger emotional payback if you gave your money away to people whom you personally felt were deserving of it over others? This wouldn't be consistent as it would depend on your mood/personal judgement and could have undesirable ramifications (i.e. asking for more, targeting you, etc.). Whereas giving a percentage of your income to a reputable charity would spread your generosity around much further. It makes me feel really good to know that someone, somewhere in the world is having a cataract operation and can see again because of my donation to Sight Savers, for example. This is money I don't even miss because I have budgeted monthly for it monthly and it comes out of my bank account directly. Plus there is the bonus of the tax deduction. There are such enormous disparities of wealth distribution in the world it's unfathomable.
If you really want some instant emotional feedback, keep a pockful of change and give it to a begger each day (whether or not you feel they are worthy of it) and wait to watch them look you in the eye and smile - and smile back!
