- Given that you’ve solved the residency requirement for your d’s in-state tuition, can you sell your place in ca over summer and have your wife and d join you in va? The move is a non-starter for me without my wife. I’ve seen other couples try this and it often ended in divorce.
- what is the housing market like in the Bay Area? Will you be able to sell quickly?
- how far are away is family in va? It will be good to have some moral support from them and perhaps they are knowledgeable about the area.
- renting in va for a year is prob a good idea, allows you to get lay of land
- starting a new job is considered a top five most stressful life event. So is moving. I’d spend some $ to relieve some of that stress perhaps by hiring someone to do relo planning.
- as a former senior architect and cto, I’d want to spend a little time trying to think about if you failed that tech test and why. Perhaps review questions and answers with a friend.
Personally, based on the pros and cons as presented, if your wife can join you, I suggest moving. If you can rent your current home and rent in va, you could think of it as trial move and, if you hate the work, look for jobs in ca and/or va.
Good luck!
