Personal Consumer Issues • How to travel using points?

OP I burn about a million points a year on travel (as a mostly solo traveler) and my advice to most folks is unless you see this as a hobby and really want to learn the ins and outs of booking on points you are almost certainly better off perusing cash back. Personally to me it is a hobby/part time job that I really enjoy (both figuring out how to earn and how to spend points).

More specifically to your question, if you haven't even earned the points yet (and even then to some extent) you should probably forget trying to do something on points in November, particularly if you haven't done it before. I book most of my trips at 9-12 months out.

Also it is very hard to give any guidance without knowing where you want to go, what sort of hotels you want, etc. I have spent years learning the ins and outs of booking points travel and pretty much learned via Flyertalk, various travel/CC blogs, Reddit Awardtravel/Churning and some private forums and communities.

The points game can be a lot of fun and I have done a ton of travel in the last ten years I would never have done otherwise (Australia, Easter Island, Egypt, Cambodia, Svalbard archipelago, etc., etc). But as I said it is a big hobby/part time job for me. I will also say while things are somewhat harder than they used to be a lot of folks overplay that.
