Personal Finance (Not Investing) • If You Live in a State Where Servers Get The Actual Minimum Wage - Have you tried not tipping

I get that historically tipping servers was required as the their wage was about $3 and below the state minimum.

But lately many states have finally gotten around to doing away with that. For example, here in CA there is a $16 minimum wage but because fast food workers get $20 an hour minimum wage, most restaurants also pay $20 an hour. My own kid gets paid that much despite having no experience.

So given these servers are now earning a decent minimum wage I'm starting to think why tip them? Two reasons for not tipping servers come to mind:

a) We are just contributing to the problem of employers underpaying their wait staff. Servers are now expecting the customer to directly pay part of their wage when it should be their employer.
b) There are perhaps more deserving people to receive a tip.

Now granted b) is subjective. But I noticed in my area most servers at restaurants are young college kids but workers in Walmart, McDonalds and other "dead-end" jobs are older and seem to be stuck there. So why not tip them.

I'm genuinely curious if people are not tipping or reducing their tips if they work/visit an area where servers get paid a proper minimum wage.
