We placed our countertop microwave in a below-counter opening. Have had no issues, but you do need to make sure you have adequate clearance for airflow around the unit. The manufacturers will spec this. We prefer this location to a higher/above counter cubby (which we've had twice) for visibility and height of hot items. We couldn't see paying 4-5x the price (or more for a "luxury branded" model) for a drawer microwave.
Be aware that (at least as of a couple of years ago) Sharp manufactures all the drawer microwave units, no matter the brand.
