I didn't. I assumed you recommended against the Spanish Med coast, since a lot of it is mass tourism at its worst. Anyway, my primary recommendation is for places like Sevilla, Cordoba, and Granada, which are not on the coast.I think you must have missed the bolded part in my message.Nice places, but Andalusia is significantly warmer and drier, and there's everything - cities, history, beaches, great food. Why fly?
I would take a TGV to Bordeaux. The TGV itself is quite an experience if your kids have not done it before. Then explore that region - Bordeaux, Nantes, La Rochelle, etc. You are out of season but sometimes its a worthwhile trade off versus crazy crowding.
Alternatively a TGV to Nice (direct), and visit (drive) the French and Italian Rivera. Again out of season but fewer tourists. The coastal drive is beautiful.
If you want warmer weather, I'd look at flying somewhere on the Med / Adriatic - Southern Italy, Corfu, Crete. Plenty of history to explore. If you prefer cities then both Rome and Athens will be *much* more bearable both weather- and tourist- wise in March. I'd agree with others regarding the Spanish coast. I love Portugal but I can't stand the Algarve: it is full of "ex-pat" communes and blighted with golf courses.
