I accumulated most of my wealth in a workplace plan whose index funds have never made any kind of distribution 1987 to date.
One slick thing with that is that you can compute total return from any past date by just subtracting the current share price from that past date share price and dividing that by the past share price.

In my other retirement accounts I just view them as a minor nuisance and in taxable accounts they are a cost drag.

On Bogleheads their existence requires a sticky message in this forum "Why did my fund suddenly drop in value?"
And you regularly read messages from members lamenting a fund poor performance based on comparing past share prices and without correction for distributions.
