Personal Finance (Not Investing) • Tree Fell on my property

You know, we were looking at this huge black walnut in my friend's backyard the other day and it needs to be taken out...What do we even search for to find someone who would be interested in purchasing it for lumber (or just removing it at no cost to us)?
A tree service should know. The tree service/arborist I used to work for in DC knew what was valuable and who needed it. Instead of paying to take a tree to the dump they made additional money by selling it.

There are people looking for logs to mill their own lumber. People looking for a certain wood for art, furniture or sculpture. And sawmills looking for whatever they need. And of course people looking for the right logs to make firewood, either for themselves or to sell.
A tree service might, but they don't make money by referring work to others. Most of them will probably prefer to take the tree down themselves, and if they know of someone who will pay for the wood, they account for the value in their price. Probably the simplest way to address it is the usual: get several quotes.

From what I have read, demand for black walnut went through a bit of a boom and bust, and it's become harder to find anyone who will take down trees in simple exchange for the wood than it was a few years ago. This is especially true if there are any factors making it more difficult to take down safely like being close to a house. I would assume a lot of the people who do the wood-for-removal-service exchanges are found via the "I know a guy who knows a guy..." method, and the answer to requests to see evidence of license, bonding, and insurance is, "do you want the tree gone or not?"
