Our family faced a similar situation and this was our timeline.We do have a message to D’s SS attorney about how long he’s estimating before we hear back on 2nd appeal and what Rhee idea she may have that may affect our estate planning.

Day 1 plus ten months - Received letter from Social Security Administration saying previous determination to deny claim was correct

Day 1 plus fourteen months - Received letter from Social Security Administration / Office of Disability Adjudication and Review – noting a “Notice of Decision – Unfavorable
.... several years later ... as family member continued to experience poor health, an application was made for SSI (too much time had passed ... and not enough recent quarters of coverage). SSI application approved.
Family member is beneficiary of a special needs trust that will be fully funded upon death of second parent. Currently not eligible for an ABLE account due to age but may relook in 2026 onward when age limit goes up.
Consider having conversations on the mechanisms that you will have in place to support your adult child when you are no longer able. Will your healthy child be involved ? My family's arrangement was initially set up over a decade ago and we may looking at monitoring a special needs trust once it is funded for decades after that.
