As a recent example, a 100% stock return -2.73% for the 10 year period between 2000 to 2009. While you are likely to come out ahead in stock in stock in 10 year, you might not.

A mix of stocks and bond will give you a less volatile outcome.

You can also but individual bond where the bond matures in 10 years. Something like tips would be better.
