Toyota Brake Assist drives me nuts at times in my 2023 4Runner. Note that it measures the speed at which you get on the brake pedal. Imagine a low speed merge situation - maybe a line of cars all rolling up fitfully as each one makes a right turn at a yield sign. Imagine you have your foot on the brake pedal and the stupid truck keeps locking the rear wheels when you tap the pedal a little hard. Sure, I'm 6' and weigh 210# and maybe not too gentle on the brake pedal, and the tires only skid six inches or a foot, but what the heck Toyota.
"Toyota Brake Assist is a safety feature that helps drivers apply full emergency stopping power in a panic-stop situation:
Detects panic braking
Brake Assist monitors the speed and force with which a driver presses the brake pedal. If it detects a panic braking situation, it applies the brakes at full strength.
Applies full braking force
Brake Assist applies full braking force to help stop the vehicle in the shortest distance possible."
I don't use the lane departure warning, don't trust the blind spot monitor, don't like the smart cruise control but by holding the on switch in for 3 seconds it reverts to the old dumb cruise control so that's fine. I really like the computer generated overhead camera view that lets me see how close I am to the parking lot lines (or a rock, ditch, dropoff, boulder or whatnot offroad. I can even see if I've parked in a puddle before my wife gets out.) It uses front and rear cameras and a camera under each side view mirror.
