For 2024 year end capital gain distributions, the preliminary (November) estimates are out for a lot of fund families. Annual Morningstar roundup: Ready for a Big Capital Gains Tax Bill? But, what about mutual funds (mostly Vanguard and a bit of Janus; mix of index and non-index)? I need to guess on dividends and capital gains (hopefully not short vs long term).
For the specific fund families you mention:
For Vanguard: General procedure: Search for "Vanguard Tax Center". (If necessary, select "2024 tax information"). Click on "Preliminary capital gains distribution estimates". Click on the "View Preliminary Estimates" download button, which will bring you to this specific pdf document.
Vanguard will update CGD estimates and add on December dividend estimates in a similar document in early December.
There is also the annual Boglehead's thread for Vanguard year end estimates going, although it has been sleepier than it often is:
[Vanguard] 2024 Year-end Distribution Estimates
For Janus, Morningstar has their annual roundup of capital gain distribution estimates out: Ready for a Big Capital Gains Tax Bill?
Search for "Janus", and there is a section listing the Janus Henderson funds with the highest estimated CGD, plus a link to the complete Janus pdf.
Note that Vanguard's current ("Preliminary") estimates use data through 10/31/24, while Janus is using data through 9/3/2024. Especially with the Janus, there is still time for something to change significantly, so keep in mind the "Preliminary" part of the estimates.
